The reading
How it began
Jesus takes three disciples up a mountain. He is transfigured before them: face like the sun, clothes white as light. Moses and Elijah appear — the Law and the Prophets — speaking, Luke says, of his “departure” which he is to accomplish at Jerusalem.
The day itself
Peter, overwhelmed, offers to build three tents. He is still trying to house the moment. A cloud overshadows them, as the cloud covered the tent of meeting. A voice: “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” Then suddenly only Jesus, as they have known him.
What was kept
He tells them to say nothing until the Son of Man is raised from the dead. The vision is not a spare of the Passion. It is light to walk through it by.

How to read The Transfiguration
The Transfiguration answers a fear: that the cross will make nonsense of Jesus’ words. The Church fathers loved this scene because it shows that the one who will be disfigured on Good Friday is already, in his person, radiant. Glory is not the opposite of the cross. It is hidden inside it.
Moses and Elijah departing leave the disciples with one command: listen to him. Later private revelations, even approved ones, stand under that sentence. Mary at Cana said the same. No apparition outranks the Son.

Sacred Scripture
The feast of the Transfiguration is kept on 6 August. The event is public revelation, witnessed by three apostles, later attested by Peter in his letter: we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
The shrine today
Why pilgrims still go
This is not a later shrine. This is the map of the Gospel. The empty tomb, the lake, the cave at Bethlehem, the stone of the agony. Every other Catholic pilgrimage is an echo of having been here — or of wishing you had.

For the classroom
The Transfiguration (c. AD 32, A high mountain (traditionally Tabor)). Grade in this encyclopedia: Sacred Scripture. Peter, James, and John see Jesus’ face shine like the sun, Moses and Elijah speaking with him, a bright cloud, and the Father’s voice. A glimpse of glory before the cross.
