The reading
In plain speech
Since 24 June 1981, six young people in Medjugorje have said that Our Lady appears to them and speaks of peace, prayer, fasting, the Mass, and Confession. Millions have gone.
In 2024 the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, with Pope Francis’s approval, granted a nihil obstat: the spiritual fruits may be encouraged, and the messages that were examined do not contradict the Faith. The Holy See did not declare that Our Lady has appeared. The local bishops’ older doubts about the visions were not turned into a yes.
Devotion is allowed. The apparitions are not confirmed. That is the official stance. It should be said in that order, and not reversed.
1. What a nihil obstat is
It is permission to go on praying, under the bishop, without the Church signing the visions. Think of it as a door left open for pilgrims and kept shut on the question “Did she appear?”
Conversions, confessions, and vocations can be real fruits of a place even while that question stays open. Fruits are not a certificate.
2. What it does not prove
Ongoing messages for decades are a difficult form. The classic apparitions the Church has approved tended to cease. A seer can be mixed. A parish can be holy and still not be a proved vision.
Nothing said at Medjugorje adds a sentence to the Gospel. If a message ever did, it would have ceased to be private, and the Church would have to refuse it.
3. The one sentence
Medjugorje is a place of prayer that Rome has allowed without saying that heaven has spoken there — and the Faith rests on Jesus Christ, not on the next message.
The older telling follows.
The record
On 24 June 1981, on a hill in a poor Herzegovinian parish, teenagers report seeing the Gospa — the Madonna. The claims become daily, then lifelong for some. Messages emphasize peace, prayer of the heart, fasting, the Mass, confession. Millions have gone. Vocations, conversions, and reported healings are part of the story; so are accusations of disobedience, financial murk, and messages of uneven quality.
The record, part 2
The local bishops of Mostar-Duvno were long negative, especially about the later, ongoing visions. Rome took the case from the diocese. Commissions sat for years. The seers, now adults, some married, still report inner locutions or visions on given dates.

How to read Medjugorje
Medjugorje forces the Catholic distinction between fruits and facts. A place can produce prayer and still not be a proven apparition. A seer can be mixed. The Church, in the note of 2024, is willing to bless the prayer and withhold the metaphysical certificate.
If one is Catholic, that reserve is not stinginess. It is how Rome treated even Lourdes — slowly — and how the Church now treats a phenomenon that will not end. Ongoing monthly messages are, historically, a difficult form. Authentic classic apparitions tend to cease.

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, with Pope Francis’s approval (note of 19 September 2024), granted a nihil obstat to Medjugorje: positive fruits, permission for devotion, no declaration that the Virgin has appeared. Earlier, Francis allowed parish pilgrimages (2019) without authenticating the visions. The local bishop’s older negative judgments on the supernatural origin have not been reversed into a “yes, she appeared.” Status: open, devotion authorized, apparitions not confirmed.

Why pilgrims still go
Since 1981, six children — now adults — have reported the Gospa. In 2024 Rome gave a nihil obstat: go, pray, the fruits are noted. Confession is the most boring and most serious harvest of the place. The square still fills.

Medjugorje (1981 – ongoing claims, Medjugorje). Grade in this encyclopedia: Open / under study. The most visited unapproved apparition site in the world. Six young people claimed daily visions from 1981. In 2024 Rome issued a “nihil obstat”: the Holy See finds no contradiction of faith and morals in the spiritual fruits, but does not declare the apparitions supernatural.
