The reading

In plain speech

In 1877, while the Prussian state was pressing the Church, two girls at Gietrzwałd said Our Lady spoke to them in Polish and asked for the Rosary. The formal declaration that the apparitions are supernatural came from the Bishop of Warmia in 1977.

A century of cult before the decree is how the Church often moves. The decree is a real judgement. It is not a new article of faith.

1. What it does not prove

Mary’s Polish, in the story, is not a political programme and not a permission to hate a neighbour. It is a refusal to let prayer be managed by the state. The whole public message is the Rosary.

The spring and the shrine illustrate that. They do not replace Sunday Mass.

2. The one sentence

Gietrzwałd is two girls, a Rosary, and a bishop’s yes a hundred years on — Poland’s approved apparition of that era, and still not the foundation. Jesus Christ is.

The older telling follows.

The record

Justyna Szafryńska, 13, and Barbara Samulowska, 12, see a lady in the trees near the parish church, 27 June to 16 September 1877. The Prussian state is trying to Germanize and to control the Church. Mary speaks Polish. She tells them to pray the rosary. She blesses a well.

The record, part 2

Pilgrims come at once, to the irritation of officials. The girls later enter religious life. Recognition by the Church takes a century; the cult never dies.

The shrine today

Why pilgrims still go

1877. Poland’s approved apparition — two girls, a lady who spoke Polish under Prussian rule, a spring, a rosary. The brick shrine still stands in the fields of Warmia. You go because Mary spoke the language of a people who were not supposed to keep it.

Our Lady of Fátima

Cova da Iria, Fátima1917

In 1917, in a hollow of pasture called the Cova da Iria, near the village of Fátima in Portugal, three shepherd children — Lúcia dos Santos, ten, and her cousins Francisco Marto, nine, and Jacinta Marto, seven — saw a lady brighter than the sun, six times, on the 13th of the month from May to October. She asked for the rosary every day, for the conversion of sinners, for devotion to her Immaculate Heart, and that a chapel be built. On 13 July she showed them hell and spoke of war and of Russia. On 13 October, before a crowd of tens of thousands standing in the rain, including reporters who had come to mock, the sun appeared to dance. Francisco and Jacinta died in the influenza. Lúcia lived until 2005 as a nun. The bishop of Leiria declared the apparitions worthy of belief on 13 October 1930.

The first (and so far only) Marian apparition in the United States approved by a bishop: Adele Brise, a Belgian immigrant, is told to “gather the children” and teach them the faith. A shrine stands where the Peshtigo fire later stopped.
