The reading

In plain speech

In 1859, in the woods of Wisconsin, Adele Brise said a lady told her to gather the children and teach them the Faith. In 2010 the Bishop of Green Bay declared the apparitions worthy of belief — the first Marian apparition in the United States approved by a bishop.

That is the ordinary Catholic way these things are judged. It is not a new article of the Creed. The message is a job: catechism, in a place where children did not know the sign of the cross.

1. What it does not prove

The Peshtigo fire of 1871 spared the chapel grounds, in the shrine’s memory, while the region burned. That deliverance is not a promise that every church will be spared, and it is not the point of the apparition. The point is the children.

America’s approved apparition is not an apocalypse. It is a school.

2. The one sentence

Champion is a frontier catechist, a bishop’s yes in 2010, and a shrine — and the Faith rests on Jesus Christ, not on the clearing in the woods.

The older telling follows.

The record

Adele Brise, 28, is walking through woods in the Wisconsin frontier. A lady in white appears, finally speaking: she is the Queen of Heaven. “Gather the children in this wild country and teach them what they should know for salvation.” Adele obeys for the rest of her life, walking miles to catechize, founding a third-order community.

The record, part 2

On 8 October 1871 the Peshtigo fire, one of the deadliest in American history, burns the region. Families take refuge at Adele’s chapel, processing with the statue of Mary. The fire passes around the grounds. The shrine property is spared.

How to read Our Lady of Champion

America’s approved apparition is not an apocalypse. It is a job description for a catechist. In a “wild country” the Queen of Heaven worries about children who do not know the sign of the cross. That is a very Catholic miracle: the supernatural as a reminder to do the obvious work.

Church status

How this sign has been received

Church-approved

Bishop David Ricken of Green Bay declared on 8 December 2010 that the apparitions are worthy of belief. The USCCB has recognized the shrine as a national shrine. This is diocesan approval, the ordinary Catholic mechanism.

The shrine today

Why pilgrims still go

The first and only approved Marian apparition in the United States. In 1859 Adele Brise, a Belgian immigrant, was told: ‘Gather the children, and teach them what they should know for salvation.’ A chapel in a field. A diocese that, in 2010, said yes.
