The reading

How it began

In 1900 Donglü is surrounded. The tradition is of a Marian apparition in the air, of a strange fog, of a relief that should not have happened. A priest, Fr. Wu, later commissions the image in imperial dress. Shanghai’s 1924 synod names Our Lady of China patroness of the country. The shrine has been destroyed and rebuilt, opened and closed, as the politics of the century required.

How to read Our Lady of China

Guadalupe gave Mary a mestiza face. Donglü gives her a Chinese one. Inculturation is not a committee word when it is a mother in the sky over a village that is about to die.

How this sign has been received

Long veneration

The 1924 Shanghai synod, with papal confirmation of the patronage, received the title. The 1900 events are the founding legend of a national cult under pressure. Status: venerated; the apparition itself is not a Lourdes-file decree.
