The reading

How it began

The tradition is of 1798: refugees in the rain forest, sickness, a woman of light who speaks their language and points to the ferns. There is no surviving process of the eighteenth century. There is a people who have gone back to that clearing ever since.

The day itself

The basilica was bombed in 1972. A new one rises. John Paul II, in 1998, recalled La Vang as the heart of Vietnamese Catholic memory. The lady in áo dài is how a persecuted Church was allowed to see its mother in its own clothes.

How to read Our Lady of La Vang

La Vang is not Lourdes with a better file. It is a folk apparition that became a nation’s shrine because the fruits — endurance, medicine, a Church that would not die — were the file.

How this sign has been received

Long veneration

The Vietnamese bishops have received the shrine as the national Marian centre. Rome has blessed the pilgrimage. There is no 19th-century-style decree “worthy of belief” of the Lourdes type; there is a living, episcopally shepherded cult. Status: venerated, nationally.

The shrine today

Why pilgrims still go

A lady in áo dài, in a jungle, telling hiding Christians to boil the leaves for medicine. You go because a persecuted Church was given a mother in its own clothes, and because the basilica still fills the clearing.
