1. The painting before
Parish memory in Bogotá’s old telling names the patron Antonio de Santana and the painter Alonso de Narváez. Mary and the Child stand between Saint Andrew and Saint Anthony. The canvas went to a modest chapel at Suta, took the wet, and faded until it was hardly an image.
2. What is reported on the feast of Stephen
On 26 December 1586 María Ramos, and with her a woman named Isabel, are the witnesses the tradition keeps. They prayed before the spoiled cloth. The colours are said to have returned, suddenly, in a clear light. The town moved the image. A basilica rose. In time the Holy See crowned Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá as a national devotion of Colombia. A Venezuelan shrine of the same title is a daughter devotion, not this painting.
3. What a crowning means
A canonical crowning says the Church receives the people’s love and judges the devotion sound. It does not publish a spectrograph of the 1586 surface. The image is a real object with an Indigenous and Spanish history around it. Faith here is allowed to be glad of a renewed face without pretending the renewal has been proved like a theorem.

How to read Our Lady of Chiquinquirá
Renewal of a ruined image is a small parable of grace: what exposure had spoiled is not past being given back. The neighbour, in the old Andean towns, is part of that sentence.
