The reading

How it began

The tradition of Ivorra, set in the first years of the eleventh century, names a priest, Bernat Oliver, who was saying the words and did not believe them. Blood issued from the chalice onto the linen and the altar. He went to the bishop of Vic. The linens were kept.

The day itself

The parish still shows them. The cult is among the oldest in the Catalan list. There is no medieval laboratory and no modern one. There is a village that has ordered its feast around those cloths for a thousand years, which is a fact even if a historian reserves judgment on the hour itself.

How to read Ivorra

Ivorra is early. It is worth saying so, because the Church was already telling this kind of story — a priest, a doubt, a cloth — centuries before Corpus Christi was a universal feast.
