The reading
In plain speech
In 1608 a fire destroyed the Benedictine church at Faverney. Witnesses said the monstrance was found hanging in the air above the ashes, the Hosts unharmed, and that it did not fall for many hours.
The archbishop of Besançon took depositions. Pope Paul V allowed a feast. The Church has not defined the physics of a floating vessel. The claim is a Host that the fire did not take.
1. What it does not prove
It does not prove that every church fire will spare the tabernacle, and it does not mean God owes a parish an exception. The bush that burns and is not consumed is already in Scripture. Faverney, if received, is that image at an altar.
Faith does not rest on whether you can reconstruct the wires.
2. The one sentence
Faverney is a monstrance said to have hung above a burnt church — investigated in its own century, and still not the foundation. Jesus Christ is.
The older telling follows.
The record
On the night of 25–26 May 1608, fire consumes the abbey church of Faverney. In the morning, in the ruined sanctuary, witnesses report the silver ostensorium hanging in space above the altar steps, untouched, the two Hosts inside unharmed. When it finally descends, it is caught.
The record, part 2
The archbishop of Besançon investigates. Depositions are taken. A papal brief of Paul V authorizes a feast. Pilgrims come. One of the Hosts was later consumed; the other was kept.
Reading
How to read Faverney
Fire is an old biblical sign — the bush that burns and is not consumed. Here the church burns and the Presence is not consumed. For a France already torn by wars of religion, a Host that will not burn preached more loudly than a treatise.
Church status
How this sign has been received
Long veneration
Formally recognized by the local ordinary and confirmed with papal indulgences. A classic case in the French catalogue of Eucharistic miracles.
