The reading

In plain speech

At Chirattakonam in Kerala, in 2001, during adoration in a Syro-Malankara parish, three red marks appeared on the Host and were seen as a face. The archbishop had photographs taken at once. The Host is kept.

The Church has no separate miracle-decree from Rome for this event. An Eastern Catholic parish is a reminder that faith in the Eucharist is not a Latin peculiarity. A face on bread is also the easiest thing for a human eye to invent.

1. What it does not prove

People see faces in clouds. Photographs exist so the claim can be looked at, not only heard. Looking is not the same as proving, and proving would still not be the Creed.

The Holy Face devotion is older than 2001. This Host, if received, joins that devotion. It does not replace the Mass.

2. The one sentence

Chirattakonam is three stains, a photographed face, and a local permission to pray — not a new Gospel. Jesus Christ is the Gospel.

The older telling follows.

The record

On 28 April 2001, at St. Mary’s parish, the priest exposed the Host for adoration. A reddish stain appeared, then two more. Parishioners saw, on the Host, the likeness of a bearded face. Archbishop Cyril Mar Baselios had photographs taken immediately. The Host is kept as a relic.

The record, part 2

The event occurred in the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church — one of the Eastern Catholic churches in full communion with Rome — a reminder that Eucharistic faith is not a Latin peculiarity.

Reading

How to read Chirattakonam

An image appearing on the Host is a different grammar from bleeding heart-tissue cases. It is closer to the tradition of the Holy Face. The danger is projection: humans see faces in clouds.

Church status

How this sign has been received

Locally approved

The Malankara Catholic ordinary documented the fact and permitted devotion. There is no CDF miracle decree. Status: locally received, Eastern Catholic, part of the modern catalogue.

The shrine today

Why pilgrims still go

During Mass on 15 November 2013, a face appeared on the consecrated Host — bearded, wounded, the Holy Face as the Church has always painted him. In 2025 the Holy See allowed the diocese to present the event as a Eucharistic miracle. You go to look at him who looks at you from the altar.
