The reading
How it began
Pallotti dies in 1850. The body, later found in a good state, is in San Salvatore in Onda. He had wanted a Church in which the laity were not an audience. The shrine is still a working parish of that idea.
The day itself
Vincent Pallotti died in Rome on 22 January 1850, after a life of organizing clergy, laypeople, and religious into one work — the Union of Catholic Apostolate — and of hearing confessions until he collapsed. He was buried at San Salvatore in Onda, the small church in the Tiber bend that is still the centre of the Pallottines. In 1906 and again in 1950 the remains were examined. The body was found preserved and is shown in the church, under the altar, vested as a priest. John XXIII beatified him in 1950. Paul VI canonized him on 20 January 1963, during the Second Vatican Council, which was fitting for a man who had already treated the laity as apostles and not as an audience. The preservation is visible. The idea is in the rule of the Union, which is the relic that can be copied without cutting a body.
