The reading

In plain speech

At Sokółka in Poland, in 2008, a Host that fell at Communion was placed in water. A red stain appeared. Two professors of pathology at Białystok reported heart muscle grown into the remaining bread in a way they said a smear would not explain.

The archbishop authorised veneration in his diocese. The Holy See has not issued a separate decree for the whole Church. Local approval is a real judgement. It is not a new dogma.

1. What it does not prove

Two careful professors are not the same as a public international forensic archive. “We cannot explain the join between tissue and bread” is a strong sentence. It is not the sentence “therefore every doctrine is proved”.

The Church already believed the Real Presence before 2008. Sokółka illustrates. It does not found.

2. The one sentence

Sokółka is a dropped Host and a pathologist’s report, received by a Polish archbishop for veneration — and the Faith rests on the words of Jesus Christ, not on the stain.

The older telling follows.

The record

On 12 October 2008, a Host falls during Communion at St. Anthony’s in Sokółka. It is put in water in the tabernacle, the ordinary remedy. A week later, Sister Julia Dubowska finds a red, living-looking stain on the still-undissolved Host.

The record, part 2

The archbishop, Edward Ozorowski, has it photographed and, in January 2009, examined by two professors of pathomorphology at the Medical University of Białystok, Maria Sobaniec-Łotowska and Stanisław Sulkowski. They report myocardial tissue of a dying heart, the fibers interpenetrating the bread in a manner they say could not be produced by placing tissue onto a Host.

The record, part 3

In 2011 the relic is moved to a chapel for public veneration. Pilgrims come. Poland, already a land of Częstochowa, adds a Eucharistic shrine of the twenty-first century.

Reading

How to read Sokółka

Sokółka is Lanciano’s grammar in modern Polish. The same heart, the same wound. Whether one finds that repetition suspicious or coherent depends on prior beliefs. A Catholic can say: if the sign is from God, it is not surprising that he repeats himself. God is not hunting originality.

Church status

How this sign has been received

Locally approved

The metropolitan curia of Białystok issued a statement in 2009 that the Host has marks of a Eucharistic miracle, and authorized worship. The Polish bishops have not treated it as a curiosity. The Holy See has not issued a separate global decree. Status: locally approved for veneration.

Investigation

What has been examined

The two professors published descriptions in Polish scientific and Church channels. They emphasize the interpenetration of remaining bread with heart muscle, which they argue rules out a simple smear. Critics note the absence of a full international forensic protocol. The diocese’s decision rested on their report plus theological judgment.

The shrine today

Why pilgrims still go

A dropped Host, a red stain, two pathologists reporting heart muscle fused with the bread. The Archbishop of Białystok authorized veneration. You go to look at a twenty-first-century Lanciano in a Polish parish, and to go to Mass afterward in the ordinary way.
