The reading

In plain speech

Offida keeps a bloodstained tile from a stable near Lanciano, where in 1273 a woman is said to have hidden a Host taken for a charm. Oxen knelt. Franciscans later carried the relic to Offida.

The cult is local and old. The Church has not defined it. Kneeling animals are a sermon, not a zoology paper.

1. What it does not prove

It does not prove that animals recognise the Sacrament in a way a laboratory can film, and it does not make Santarém and Offida into one event. The sad plot repeats because the sin repeats.

Creation, in the story, remembers what a baptised person tried to forget. That is the point. It is not a second Gospel.

2. The one sentence

Offida is a Host hidden in a stable and a tile still shown by Franciscans — and the Faith rests on the altar, not on the tile.

The older telling follows.

The record

A woman, Ricciarella, is talked into taking a Host for a charm to recover her husband’s love — the same sad plot as Santarém. She hides it in a stable. Oxen kneel. Blood runs over the clay tiles and a beam.

The record, part 2

Years later she confesses. The bloodstained tile is taken in procession. In 1273–81 the relic passes to the Franciscans of Offida, in the Marches, where it is still kept in the sanctuary of St. Augustine.

Reading

How to read Offida

Catholic folklore loves kneeling animals (the ox and ass at Bethlehem stand behind it). The point is not zoology. It is that creation sometimes seems to remember what a baptized person has chosen to forget.

Long veneration

Approved local cult, Franciscan custody, a regular stop in the Italian Eucharistic-miracle pilgrimage that Carlo Acutis later mapped for the young.
