Prayer of St. Thomas before study

Before an exam, a book, a sermon, any work of the mind.

Grant me, O merciful God, to desire eagerly, to search out wisely, to know truly, and to fulfill perfectly all that is pleasing to You, to the praise and glory of Your Name.

Ineffable Creator, who from the treasures of your wisdom have appointed three hierarchies of angels and set them in admirable order over the heavens: you have chosen the eighth to be the Church’s teachers. You have appointed the differences of the stars, and you give to each its office. Pour forth, I pray, a ray of your brightness into the darkness of my understanding. Take from me the double darkness of sin and ignorance in which I was born. Give me a sharp sense, a clear memory, and the gift of being a good learner, that I may begin, continue, and complete my work to your glory. Amen.
