Mary goes in haste after the Annunciation. Elizabeth is in her sixth month.
Now. The Church of the Visitation at Ain Karim keeps this meeting. The Magnificat is Mary’s answer, not a later hymn fitted to the scene. She speaks of the mercy that scatters the proud and fills the hungry.Then. Mary greets Elizabeth. The child in Elizabeth’s womb leaps. Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cries out the words the Hail Mary still carries: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
