The boat

The evening on the lake, when the boat was filling and the Lord was asleep.

On that day, when evening had come, He said to them, Let us go across to the other side. And leaving the crowd, they took Him with them in the boat, just as He was. Other boats were with Him. A great storm of wind rose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. He was in the stern, asleep on the cushion.

The men who lived by that water were afraid of it. They woke Him and said, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? He woke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace. Be still. The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith? And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?

Stay in the boat. The cushion is wet. The wood is wet. The fear has a name, if this week has given it one. He does not leave the hull. He speaks, and the water lies down. Then He asks about faith, and the question is allowed to stand.

Our Father, once. Glory be. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
